MUSEUM AND VISITOR CENTER HOURS OF OPERATION

The Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park is open 362 days per year, closed only on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. (The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center may close early the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Please call the Museum and Visitor Center at 866-889-1243 or 717-334-1124 to check operating hours on these days. Early closings will also be noted on this page.)

  • November — March: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • April — October: 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

To reserve a Licensed Battlefield Guide, purchase advance tickets for the Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience or the Eisenhower National Historic Site or book a battlefield bus tour, contact the Reservations department toll-free at 877-874-2478 (717-334-2436) or reserve online.

Hours subject to change.

Gettysburg Park's Summer Visiting Hours Begin April 1: Beginning April 1, 2010, Gettysburg National Military Park will change to its summer visiting hours. The grounds of the battlefield will stay open to the public from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. The Museum and Visitor Center's operating hours will be from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily. These summer visiting hours will continue through Oct. 31.

THE RUPP HOUSE (451 BALTIMORE STREET, GETTYSBURG)

Open Friday-Sunday from May to September (2010 visitation hours are below):

  • Friday: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
  • Sunday: Noon – 5 p.m.
DIRECTIONS TO GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK

The Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park should be your first stop when you arrive in town. The facility is easily accessible from major highways, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

DIRECTIONS BY CAR

There are many roads that lead to the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park, located in Adams County, Pennsylvania.

TRAVELING FROM THE NORTH

From New York City/ Southern Connecticut/Northern New Jersey

  1. Take I-80 west to I-287 (Garden State Parkway) south to I-78 west to I-81 south to I-83 south to Pennsylvania Rt. 581 west.
  2. Exit 5B to Pennsylvania Rt. 15 south.
  3. Watch for signs along Pennsylvania Rt. 15 that direct you to the Museum and Visitor Center via the Baltimore Pike exit.

From New England/ Eastern Upstate New York

  1. Take I-84 west to I-81 south to I-83 south to I-283 south to the Pennsylvania Turnpike west.
  2. Take Exit 236 and follow Pennsylvania Rt. 15 south.
  3. Watch for signs along Pennsylvania Rt. 15 that direct you to the Museum and Visitor Center via the Baltimore Pike exit.
TRAVELING FROM THE EAST

From Philadelphia, Central/ Southern New Jersey

  1. Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike west to Exit 236.
  2. Take Pennsylvania Rt. 15 south.
  3. Watch for signs along Pennsylvania Rt. 15 that direct you to the Museum and Visitor Center via the Baltimore Pike exit.
TRAVELING FROM THE SOUTH

From Washington, D.C.

  1. Take I-495 to I-270 north through Frederick, Md. to Rt. 15 north.
  2. Exit at Rt. 97 (Baltimore Pike) and turn left at the end of the exit ramp.
  3. Follow Rt. 97 (Baltimore Pike) and watch for signs that direct you to the new Museum and Visitor Center at 1195 Baltimore Pike.

From Baltimore, Md.

  1. Take I-695 to I-795 north to Rt. 140 west (through Westminster, Md.) to Rt. 97 north.
  2. In Gettysburg, Rt. 97 becomes Baltimore Pike. Watch for signs that direct you to the Museum and Visitor Center at 1195 Baltimore Pike.

From Western North Carolina, Western Virginia and West Virginia

  1. Take I-81 north to Exit 16.
  2. Take Rt. 30 east to Gettysburg. At the traffic circle, go 1/4 of the way around the circle and turn right onto Baltimore Street (Rt. 97).
  3. Follow Baltimore Street (Rt. 97) through Gettysburg to the intersection of Baltimore Street and Steinwehr Avenue (Business Route 15). Proceed straight on Baltimore Street. Watch for directional signs leading to the new Museum and visitor Center at 1195 Baltimore Pike (Baltimore Street becomes Baltimore Pike).
TRAVELING FROM THE WEST

From Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and the Midwest

  1. Take the Pennsylvania Turnpike east to Blue Mountain Exit 201.
  2. At Exit 201, follow Rt. 997 (Cumberland Highway) south to Rt. 30 (Lincoln Highway) east.
  3. In Gettysburg, Rt. 30 becomes Chambersburg Road.
  4. Proceed straight on Chambersburg Road to the traffic circle. At the traffic circle, go 1/4 of the way around the circle and exit onto Baltimore Street (Rt. 97).
  5. Follow Baltimore Street (Rt. 97) through Gettysburg to the intersection of Baltimore Street and Steinwehr Avenue (Business Route 15). Proceed straight on Baltimore Street. Watch for directional signs leading to the Museum and Visitor Center at 1195 Baltimore Pike (Baltimore Street becomes Baltimore Pike).
DIRECTIONS BY AIR

Harrisburg International Airport at Middletown, Pa., is the closest air terminal. It is approximately 35 miles north of Gettysburg. The second closest is Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International near Baltimore, Md. Gettysburg has a small airfield on Route 30 west of Gettysburg that will accommodate private aircraft.

DIRECTIONS BY BUS

There is no commercial bus service into Gettysburg at this time.

DIRECTIONS BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

A downtown trolley is available from the Museum and Visitor Center. A shuttle system is available from the Museum and Visitor Center to downtown Gettysburg locations.

 

INCLEMENT WEATHER PHONE NUMBERS

In the event of inclement winter weather, the Museum and Visitor Center may either be closed, or it may close early or open later than regular operating hours.

Call 717-334-1124 or 717-338-1070 to listen to inclement weather messages about closings and delays.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Backpacks: Please note that backpacks are NOT permitted inside the Museum and Visitor Center. Please stow your large bags and backpacks in your vehicle. We thank you for your cooperation.

Strollers: Strollers are not permitted in the film theaters or the Cyclorama gallery. A stroller parking area is available outside the entrance to the film theaters.

Food: Food is available in the Refreshment Saloon. Because of health-department regulations, food prepared outside the facility is not permitted inside the Saloon. Picnic areas are available outside near the parking areas.

Accommodations for Visitors with Special Needs: The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center is a handicapped-accessible facility. The following are accommodations provided:

  • Reverse captioning for the film A New Birth of Freedom
  • Reserved seating for wheelchairs in the film theaters and the Cyclorama gallery
  • PDAs for the Cyclorama painting program
  • Assisted listening devices for the film A New Birth of Freedom and Cyclorama painting program
  • Elevator access to the Cyclorama painting gallery
  • Handicapped parking spaces
  • Handicapped drop-off at the main entrance to the Museum and Visitor Center
  • Wheelchairs are available upon request at the Information Desk in the main lobby of the Museum and Visitor Center.

When making ticket reservations for the Cyclorama, Film and Museum Experience, battlefield tours or tours of the Eisenhower National Historic Site, our guests are encouraged to alert our reservations staff of any special needs they may have.
