PRESERVATION PROJECTS.
Ensuring That The Story Continues.

Four months after the battle, Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, stating that, "The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here."

The Gettysburg Foundation’s Friends of Gettysburg is making sure that the world will, indeed, never forget. The efforts of the Friends of Gettysburg include:

Land Preservation: Gettysburg National Military Park covers nearly 6,000 of acres -- but 1,200 of them are still vulnerable to private development. The Friends of Gettysburg works to ensure the protection of this endangered land through fee purchase and historic easements.

Monument Preservation & Cannon Carriage Restoration: The nearly 1,400 monuments and 400 cannons on the battlefield require constant upkeep. Thanks to funds raised and time donated by the Friends, these memorials remain preserved.

Battlefield Rehabilitation: The Friends have built miles of historic fences, planted orchards and painted historic structures. When the new Museum and Visitor Center opens in 2008, the group will begin rehabilitation of the site of the Union battle line on July 3, 1863.

Friends of Gettysburg has also played a major role in the conservation of the Cyclorama painting, the building of the new Museum and Visitor Center, the expansion of the Gettysburg collection, the operation of our educational outreach programs and the day-to-day maintenance of the battlefield. You are invited to join in their efforts.
