The Cemetery Ridge Project
Cemetery Ridge, located on the Battlefield of Gettysburg National Military Park, is one of the most significant sites of the Civil War and, arguably, in America. It was here that the center of the Union line on July 3, 1863, repulsed the Confederate charge led by General James Longstreet and forever after known as “Pickett’s Charge”, determined the outcome of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Over the years, the visitor experience at Cemetery Ridge has been undermined by modern buildings and parking lots, as well as a combination of vegetation growth in some areas and removal in others. Because of these intrusions, visitors struggle to picture the battlefield as it existed 145 years ago.
The Gettysburg Foundation and Gettysburg National Military Park are working together to rehabilitate the landscape of Cemetery Ridge. Through this rehabilitation, visitors will better understand what happened here, and will be able to more appropriately honor the men who fought here.
