Today is GivingTuesday. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 and has since grown into a global day of giving that inspires people to celebrate generosity and collaborate to achieve new heights. In 2024, the Gettysburg Foundation is harnessing that spirit of giving to support the National Park Service at Gettysburg National Military Park in an urgent battlefield rehabilitation project.

This GivingTuesday, all proceeds raised by the Gettysburg Foundation will be dedicated to saving the Klingel Farmstead on the Gettysburg battlefield. The Klingel Farm is located along the Emmitsburg Road, leading into the heart of downtown Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where Civil War soldiers passed by on July 1, 1863. During July 2 and 3, 1863, the property saw key action from both military forces that decided the outcome of the battle and the fate of the family that lived there.

After multiple rehabilitation attempts by the National Park Service, the Klingel Farmstead is in dire need of reconstruction to save the stories preserved in its walls and the iconic viewscape of “Pickett’s Charge” that visitors travel to experience firsthand, year after year. The site is vital not only to the interpretation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but it also shines a light on the civilian experience at Gettysburg and across the country during the American Civil War. These lessons transcend time and connect the next generation to American history in an irreplaceable way.
