Gettysburg Foundation to Host Living History at Children of Gettysburg 1863®

The Gettysburg Foundation invites area residents and Gettysburg visitors to enjoy living history on select dates throughout the month of September 2024. Guests can interact with living historians in Civil War encampments on the lawn in the side yard of the historic Rupp HouseTM, home to the Children of Gettysburg 1863® interactive history museum.
The Gettysburg Foundation is pleased to partner with living historians to provide free living history programming on the following schedule in September and early October:
Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 7-8, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Society of Civil War Surgeons - 11th Corps (Union) and Florida Brigade (Confederate) Medical: Encampment and stations with "Smells of the Hospital" exhibit and a "Touch Table"
Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 21-22, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Patriot Daughters of Lancaster: Ladies’ aid society from Lancaster, formed after the firing on Fort Sumter, to provide money, food, clothing, bandages and supplies for soldiers serving in local companies of Pennsylvania regiments. The ladies cared for the wounded in Gettysburg and held sanitary fairs and bazaars to raise money.
Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 28-29, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Officers for the Union and Ladies for the Union: Officers who commanded and fought in the Battle of Gettysburg provide first-person impressions, discuss their role before, during and after the Battle of Gettysburg, and give details about military life from the officers’ perspectives. The ladies demonstrate unique home craft skills of the period (bobbin lace, hand sewing and bandbox making) and display home remedies, medical practices and children’s toys of the era, while highlighting the importance of the home front during the Civil War, support and aid for soldiers, and the effect the war had on families and communities.
Saturday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Gettysburg Independent Blues: Officers will set up camp, demonstrate military drills and provide educational programming the whole family can enjoy.
The living history programming is free and open to the public, takes place on the lawn in the side yard and may be subject to favorable weather conditions.
Located at 451 Baltimore Street in downtown Gettysburg, the interactive children’s history museum tells the engaging stories of children, teens and young adults who lived in and near the town of Gettysburg during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. Visitors can experience history as they journey through the galleries and hear first-hand accounts from numerous young residents from 1863 including William Bayly, Albertus McCreary, Sadie Bushman and Tillie Pierce.
