23rd Annual Remembrance Day Illumination

Nov 13, 2025

Crowd Expected to Join Candlelit Commemoration for Civil War Soldiers in Gettysburg.

The Gettysburg Foundation will host the 23rd Annual Remembrance Day Illumination this Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Gettysburg National Cemetery. More than 500 attendees are anticipated for this free public event that honors the 3,512 Civil War soldiers buried in Gettysburg National Cemetery. Every Civil War soldier’s grave will be illuminated with a luminary candle, and volunteers will read aloud the names of the fallen throughout the evening.

WHEN:
Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, 5:30–9:30 p.m.

WHERE:
Gettysburg National Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pa. – Taneytown Road and Baltimore Street Entrances

DETAILS:
Now in its 23rd year, the Remembrance Day Illumination has become a civic tradition linking President Lincoln’s call to “unfinished work” with contemporary citizenship. As America approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, the event offers a moment of national reflection—an opportunity for Americans to honor sacrifice and renew devotion to the principles first tested on this ground: unity, equality and democracy.

“Each candle represents both a life given and a reminder of the responsibility that remains with the living,” said Gettysburg Foundation President and CEO Jackie Spainhour. “This event invites all Americans to reflect on the ideals that define our shared national story.”

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION:
Volunteers are needed to help place luminaries, read the names of soldiers and assist with event operations. Those interested should contact Philanthropy Experience Coordinator Erin Pearce at epearce@gettysburgfoundation.org.
